Omaha Hi-Low

Omaha Hi-Low Poker Rules

  1. Each player is dealt 4 face-down, or hole, cards.
  2. Next, 5 community cards are dealt face-up, or open.
  3. Each player must form a 5 card Poker hand by using 2 of their hole cards and 3 community cards. Hi-Low Poker has the pot split between the highest and lowest hands. If a player “scoops” the pot, he or she wins both the high and low halves.
  4. The lowest qualifying hand is an 8 high – or a 9 high in some Omaha Hi-Low versions
  5. The betting depends on the version. Hi-Low Poker is often played as a Fixed Limit poker game in which the raise is pre-determined before the start of the game.
  6. Different cards may be used to create the high and low hands, or the same cards can be used for both. Extra chips are placed into the pot's high side.
  7. The highest and lowest hands at the table win.

Omaha Hi-Low Poker Strategy

***A tie for the lowest hand is common in Hi-Low versions of Omaha. It's quite easy to win ¼ of the pot, but it's not usually beneficial to play for a low pot.

***The worst possible starting hand in Omaha Hi-Low is 2222 since there would be no further cards to add to a pair to make a low hand. Other 4 of a kind possibilities aren't usually a good starting prospect either.

***Middle value cards often make poor hands because they aren't useable for low splits.

***Pairs aren't usually winners in Hi-Low Omaha Poker. Players used to winning with pairs in Texas Hold'em shouldn't use the same strategy in Hi-Low Omaha Poker.
