History of Omaha Poker

Omaha Poker is said to have originated in 1970s Detroit, Michigan. It wasn't called Omaha then, but rather “Twice There.” As it's popularity spread across the United States, the game was given different names which often involved a location. For example, in Texas, this type of Poker was called “Fort Worth.” (Ironically, Omaha, Nebraska is not known as the inspiration for the name for Omaha Poker.)

It wasn't until the early 1980s that Omaha Poker began being played in casinos. A Poker tournament champ from Alabama named Robert Turner is credited as ultimately getting Omaha into the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas. Omaha Poker was then called “Nugget Hold'em.” Since Omaha was a term already familiar with Nevadans as meaning two hole cards, the same name was given to this new two card hold'em now known as Omaha Poker.

Types of Omaha Poker Games

Limits add variety to Omaha Poker games. In Fixed Limit versions, the raise is pre-set before the game begins. In No Limit Omaha, the players are free to bet all of their chips at any time in the game.

High, Hi-Low and Pot Limit are the three main varieties of Omaha Poker. Omaha High is the European version of the game in which the low hands aren't counted. The highest hand wins.

Omaha Hi-Low Poker splits the pot between the best hand, which is the highest, and the worst, which is the lowest. Pot Limit Omaha is a favorite hold'em game for more experienced players. The betting is limited to the amount currently in the pot.
